Manipur University
Manipur University, established under the Manipur University Act, 1980, came into existence on June 5, 1980. It became central University on October 13, 2005, under the Manipur University Act, 2005, passed by the Parliament.
The main objectives shall be to disseminate and advance knowledge by providing instructional and research facilities, to make provisions for integrated courses in humanities, natural and physical sciences, social sciences, forestry and other allied disciplines in the educational programmes of the University; to take appropriate measures for promoting innovations in teaching-learning process, inter-disciplinary studies and research; to educate and train manpower for the development of the state of Manipur; and to pay special attention to the improvement of the social and economic conditions and welfare of the people of the state, and to their intellectual, academic and cultural development.
In the light of the objectives, the approach of the Manipur University is to evolve policies and programmes , to make the University a distinct addition to the national resources in higher education. The University has identified and will concentrate upon some major distinct academic programmes, which are relevant to the progress and development of the country, in general, and the North-East, in particular.
Located in the historic Canchipur, with the ruins of the old palace of Manipur in the background, the University has a campus of 287.53 acres with scenic surroundings. The campus is endowed with historical and cultural places like the Rasmandal , the place where the famous Ras Lila was performed during the reign of Rajashri Bhagyachandra, and the Langthabal Konung (Palace), where king Ghambhir Singh, a renowned poet of Manipur. The University, which has jurisdiction all over the State of Manipur, has affiliated colleges.

LIBRARY:
The Manipur University Library has a collection of more than 1, 20,000 (one lakh and twenty thousand) books and subscribes more than 280 (two hundred and eighty) national journals and 43 (forty three) foreign journals. The Library has been identified as one of the nodes of UGC INFONET and readers have been provided with facilities for direct access to the data bases of a large number of foreign journals. Computer terminals are available to the users for this purpose. And a “Wi-Fi” has been installed in the University for Better Accessibility to e-journals and internet connectivity for the teachers, research scholars, students, officers and other staff members of the University.
COMPUTER CENTRE:
The University has a well-equipped Computer Centre. It mainly caters to the computing requirements of the University like pay rolls, examination processing, etc. The Centre also conducts short-term courses for in-service trainees.
EDUCATIONAL MULTIMEDIA RESEARCH CENTRE (EMMRC):
Funded by the UGC, the Educational Multimedia Research Centre, Manipur University, is the only university media centre in the North-East. It produces educational video programmes with a view to update, upgrade and enrich the knowledge of the students by providing access to information beyond classrooms. The main target audience of the programmes, produced by the centre, is under graduate students in science, arts and commerce. The centre has recently installed one SIT platform to provide facility for EDUSAT programmes and video conferencing for students.
AUDIO-VISUAL LANGUAGE & PHONETICS LABORATORY:
The Audio-Visual Language and Phonetics Laboratory were established in 1984 from funds made available by the UGC. The Language Laboratory is one of the components of the Laboratory complex. At present, there are 15 booths with feedback facility. The Laboratory is used for M.A. courses in Language, Spoken Language Course and Certificate Courses in foreign languages. The recording studio of the Laboratory is used for recording lectures delivered by distinguished visiting scholars. There is also library of records, films and recorded tapes.
CAMPUS NETWORK:
The Centre Internet connectivity for the students and faculty @ 2MPS is available through Campus Network.
CENTRE FOR MANIPUR STUDIES:
The Centre for Manipur Studies focuses on Society, Polity and Economy of Manipur. Within this, the current research interests are in Governance, Ethnic Conflicts and Development Studies.
CENTRE FOR MYANMARESE STUDIES:
The Centre was established in 2005 to promote the study and research of the history, society, polity and economy of South-East Asia, in general, and Myanmar, in particular. Presently, the Centre is working on a research project on Trans Border Migration issues in the Indo-Myanmar region.
UNIVERSITY MUSEUM:
The University Museum is multifunctional. It provides facilities to scholars to study the various aspects of prehistoric archeology, paleobotany, paleogeology, paleozoology and other antiquities of the ancient past.
SPORTS AND CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES:
The University takes particular care for the general welfare of the students. It provides facilities for extra-curricular, co-curricular and sports activities to promote.
ACCOMODATION OF TEACHERS:
As many as 126 units of teacher’s quarters under different categories in addition to the existing ones are under construction. About 40 quarters shall be available for occupation by the beginning of the new Academic Session.
HOSTEL FACILITIES:
At present, hostel accommodation within the campus for 340 male students and 290 female students is available. Accommodation in the hostel is granted as per Hostel Rules. Students, who are admitted to the Hostel, are required to join the hostel mess.
