With a basic idea to impart higher education to the people of Manipur the Dhanamanjari College, for short, the D.M. College, was established on the 6th August 1946 with the donation of a sum of Rs. 10,000 (Rupees ten thousand) by the then Dowager Queen, Dhanamanjuri Devi of Manipur. The College was establish after a protracted but a determined efforts since about 1939-40 on the part of a group of local enthusiasts with vision and strong desire, love and zeal for imparting higher and quality education in the state of Manipur. Notable among them was Maharani Dhanamanjuri Devi who donated not only money but also persuaded Maharaj Churachand Singh, KCSU, CBE, to patronize the establishment of such an institution, the first of its kind in the state. The name of the college as Dhanamanjuri Collegewas rightly given after the Maharani in recognition of the valuable service rendered by her. In 1948 the college came under the management of the state.
The D.M. College was for the first time affiliated to the Calcutta University in 1946 but later affiliated to the Guwahati University, Assam in August 1949. The college emerged as one of the most famous and popular Colleges of the North Eastern part of India during the period between 1949 and 1981, taking top positions in most of the disciplines over and above their superb performances in sports and other co-curricular activities.
The College was affiliated to Manipur University in 1981 and in 1972, the post graduate classes got merged with the Jawaharlal Nehru University Centre, Imphal which was later on shifted to Canchipur, the present site of the Manipur University.

Till date, the college has produced a large number of academicians, intellectuals and many outstanding individuals of high professional caliber which form the cream of the Manipur society.
The college expanded in size and enrolment with the introduction of Science subjects in 1951 and Commerce stream in 1954. The imparting of B.T. course was started in 1959. However, the faculty of B.T. was soon separated to became a full-fledged Post-graduate Training College in 1972 now renamed as D.M. College of Science which retained the original building. Later, D.M. College of Arts and Commerce was shifted to the present site within the sprawling D.M. College Campus.
The growing size of classes and the need for a separate Commerce College led to a further bifurcation into D.M. College of Arts and D.M. College of Commerce on August 6, 1996 while D.M. College celebrated its golden jubilee in 2006.
