Manipur is a hill station in the northeastern part of India and boasts of a good number of colleges. Over the years higher education has greatly expanded in Manipur in terms of the number of institutions and students enrolment. Presently higher learning is imparted through 68 colleges including 7 women colleges. Of the 68 colleges in Manipur, 28 are under government management including one Medical (RIMS), 2 colleges of teacher education and one Law College. There are 6 aided colleges and the rest are privately managed colleges. The percentage of girl students in the total enrolment in colleges has increased considerably from last few decades.

The educational needs of the people of the state of Manipur are met by the colleges and institutes in Manipur. Manipur is home to several colleges and institutes in Manipur that specialize in providing the students with technical knowledge in the streams of arts, commerce and science.
The courses offered by the colleges and institutes of Manipur are approved by the All-India Council for Technical Education. Most of the educational institute and colleges are affiliated to the Manipur University that has its campus situated in the center of the city of Imphal. Classes on law and computer applications are provided within the campus of the university. Other than the colleges that function under the Manipur University, there are other autonomous colleges and institutes at Manipur that format their own syllabus and conduct their own examination. While some of the academic institutes are private institutes, some of the colleges in the state of Manipur are set up by the government.
The literacy rate in the state of Manipur as per the 2001 census was at 68.875 with male literacy at 77.875 and female at 59.70 %. In spite of the number of colleges, there is a scarcity of professional and technical institutes in Manipur which became the major employment problems in the state.

The courses offered by colleges in Manipur are approved by the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). Computer courses offered by the colleges and institution in the state include DOEACC æOÆ Level and Master of Computer Applications (MCA). There are also many engineering courses offered at the graduate level including B.E / B.Tech in Computer Science & Engineering, Electronics and more. There are quite a few law colleges in Manipur, which offer LL.B. Other courses offered at Colleges in Manipur include MBA, Medical courses and Polytechnic courses.

Manipur College Affiliations

The preponderance of the colleges in the state are affiliated to the Manipur University, which came into existence on 5th June, 1980.There is engineering college in Manipur which is known as Manipur Institute of Technology (MIT), Imphal. The state also has one medical college viz. Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) which is also one of the most excellent and largest medical institutes in the entire North Eastern region of India. And most of the medical institutes and engineering colleges of the state of Manipur are located in the capital city of Imphal, which is the hub of education in the state.

Apart from the engineering and medical colleges Manipur also have three colleges of Law and some of the Law Colleges in Manipur includes L.M.S. Law College, L. M. G. Memorial Law College and Royal Academy of Law. There is also a government run Polytechnic College in the state of Manipur.
